In its response to the application, the Minsk City Executive Committee indicated several reasons for the refusal: the lack of agreements with the police, ambulance and communal services, the route of the march, which, according to the authorities, does not meet the requirements of law [the organizers allegedly, before receiving a response from the authorities, announced the route and the time of gathering prohibited by law], and COVID-19.

According to Dmitry Kuchuk, of all the services that the organizers contacted, they received only an answer from the ambulance.

Earlier, Interior Minister Ivan Kubrakov said that the police will respond to all violations, regardless of whether the rally is allowed or not. “If, nevertheless, citizens go to unauthorized actions on this holy day, which I think is wrong and unacceptable, the employees will ensure order. Violations will be recorded and stopped. We are ready for this, “ quotes the Minister of Internal Affairs Ivan Kubrakov Sputnik.by.

Recall that on 9 April, opposition representatives submitted an application to hold the “Chernobyl Way” in Minsk, a traditional rally timed to coincide with the anniversary of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant accident. The main slogans this year were to be “Stop legal Chernobyl!”, as well as “35 years of Chernobyl in Belarus, the catastrophe continues”.

The organizing committee included representatives of the Belarusian Popular Front Party, the Belarusian Social Democratic Party (Hramada), the Belarusian Green Party, Svetlana Tikhanovskaya’s team and the movement “For Freedom”. Three people applied for the rally: Kuchuk himself, Head of the Belarusian Popular Front Party Grigory Kostusev and representative of the Belarusian Social Democratic Party Lyudmila Volkova.

On the evening of 12 April, it became known about the arrest of the leader of the Belarusian Popular Front Party Grigory Kostusev. The politician, according to his relatives, was detained in Shklov and taken to the KGB pre-trial detention centre in Minsk. Later it turned out that the politician was detained in connection with the “coup d’etat case.”

Chernobyl Way is an annual rally held on April 26 by the opposition in Belarus as a remembrance of the Chernobyl disaster. The first time it was held in 1989 with demands of urgent efforts in eliminating the consequences of the catastrophe. Usually, the protesters march from Independence Avenue to the memorial sign “Victims of Chernobyl” in the Friendship of Peoples Park. A prayer meeting and flower-laying take place there.
