Russia made use of the weakness of the new Ukrainian government and seized Ukrainian Crimea in the spring of 2014. So-called ‘men in green’ were used for it (Russian GRU members). The USA, EU and other countries did not recognize the annexation of Crimea and imposed sanctions on Russia. Belarus did not recognize the annexation of the peninsula either.
