Belarusian Party of Communists May Alter Its New Name
The Belarusian Party of Communists (BPC) may alter its new name to have it registered by the justice ministry, BPC Chairman Syarhey Kalyakin told BelaPAN.
In late December 2009, the justice ministry took one more month to decide whether to register the name and the party's amended charter.
An overwhelming majority of the delegates to the BCP's October 25 convention voted for renaming it the "Spravedlivy Mir" (Just World) Belarusian Party of the United Left and adopting the ensuing changes to its charter. An application for the registration of the new name was filed a month later.
One of the ministry's objections to the name is that it contains the word "united," as the party has not actually united with any other organization.
In addition, the justice ministry insists that the word "Communist" cannot be used in the charter because the party will cease to be a Communist one as soon as its new name is registered.
Although the party does not agree with the justice ministry, it does not consider removing the word "united" totally unacceptable, Mr. Kalyakin said.
