Not Drunkards Anymore! Belarus Drops To 27th Place In Alcohol Consumption
In the latest report of the World Health Organization (WHO) Belarus took 27th place in terms of alcohol consumption per capita.
Not drunkards anymore!
For years Belarus has been recognized as a world leader in alcohol consumption.
Fortunately, this dubious honour is gradually fading away, according to the World Health Statistics report 2018.
What is interesting is that Belarusians from the most drinking nation in the world turned into moderate drinkers.
An average Belarusian consumes 11,2 litre of alcoholic beverages per year, the latest data from 2010 to 2016 show.
In 2016 our country didn’t even get in the top 20 of the most sozzled states in Europe.
As a result, Belarus is ranked 27th in the world in terms of alcohol consumption per capita.
The first place with 15.2 liters is occupied by Moldova, then goes Lithuania (15 liters), and the Czech Republic (14.4 liters).
Germany comes fourth (13,4liters), followed by Luxembourg (13 liters) and Poland (11,6 liters).
Russia (11.7 liters) and Ukraine (8.6 liters) also remain in the top tier.
What changed?
According to WHO, in 2011 our citizens drank 17.31 liters of alcohol per capita.
In subsequent years, alcohol consumption started to drop: 16.35 liters in 2012, 14.66 in 2013, and 13.94 in 2014.
It should be noted that the statisics provided by Belarusian health officials differs from that of the WHO.
According to Belstat, Belarusians drank 8.8 liters of alcohol per capita in 2016.
The national statistics took into account the alcohol sales index of all population groups.
WHO estimated consumption of pure alcohol by people who are 15 and older.
